The Great Falls at Rock Islan
The scenic beauty of this wooded park is dominated by the Great Falls of the Caney Fork River - an imposing limestone gorge (called a gulf in southern culture). It provides scenic overlooks, waterfalls and deep pools for fishing, rock-hopping and exploring. Located at the confluence of the Collins and Caney Fork Rivers, this 883-acre park has a natural sand beach on Center Hill Resevoir. Historic features of the park include a 19th century textile mill and one of Tennessee's early hydroelectric plants.

Cummins Falls

Map & Directions Here

Cummins Falls is a gorgeous 50 foot cascade with a wonderful swimming hole at the base.
This is not a public waterfall. It is a good idea to wear waterproof shoes of some sort.

Directions: Cummins Falls is located north of Cookeville, TN off Hwy 135.
After about 10 miles there will be Cummins Mill Road on your left.
Drive about 3.5 miles to a unmarked parking area on your right. The trail starts there.

Alternately, Take Exit 280 from Interstate 40, Highway 56 North (Baxter / Gainesboro) and go
North for Approximately 8 miles. Turn Right onto TN-290 (Gainesboro Grade). After about 1 mile
turn Left onto Cummins Mills Road (gas station on the corner to your left)and then travel 3 miles where
to your left there will be a small unmarked parking area. This is where the trail starts.

The trail to the overlook is about .1 mile. To get to the base is a little more demanding
and not for the light of heart of folks with heart and/or brteathing problems.
Continue down to the river and wade across which is very shallow, but go way upstream.

After crossing, head downstream to the crest of the falls. Continue up the steep hill off to the right
and follow the path. Eventually, there will be a rope to help you down the cliff and to the lower river.
Work you way upstream to the base. You may have to wade to the middle of the river and "rock-hop" to the base.
